El Alto ist die höchste Millionenstadt der Welt. Auf über 4.000 Metern leben Menschen in einem herausforderndem Umfeld aus Armut, struktureller Gewalt und belastet durch koloniales Erbe. Trotzdem ist es ein Ort der Selbsthilfe und -organisation, in dem EIRENE-Partnerorganisationen beeindruckende Arbeit leisten. Die langjährige Fachkraft Esther Henning hat hinter die Kulissen der Anden-Metropole geblickt und ein tiefgründiges Porträt über die Stadt und ihre Menschen geschrieben.

Begegnungen und Erfahrungen in dieser Zeit prägten ihn und seinen weiteren Lebensweg. Heute hat er eine leitende Position in der Finanzbranche inne und erklärt im EIRENE-Interview, wie er von seinem ursprünglichen Berufswunsch Journalist dorthin gekommen ist.

At an altitude of over 4,000 metres, people live in a challenging environment of poverty, structural violence and the burden of colonial heritage. Nevertheless, it is a place of self-help and self-organisation, where EIRENE partner organisations are doing impressive work. Long-time peace worker Esther Henning took a look behind the scenes of the Andean metropolis and wrote an in-depth portrait of the city and its people.
